Believe it or not, you impart a legacy of health to your children that goes well beyond the genes you give them.  You also pass along health beliefs and model health-related choices.  Here are 5 tips that will set your kids up on a path towards a healthy life.

1.  Instill a sense of wonder about the body.  

Many adults fear and distrust their bodies.  They believe that the body is fragile, and illness is just around the corner.  The myth that you will catch a cold if you go outside without a coat persists.  Your kids are listening when you look in the mirror and say to no one in particular, “I’m so fat.”

The truth is your body is the most miraculous mechanical system on the planet. Cuts heal without a single thought or action on your part.  Your immune system is your own personal homeland security system, protecting you from bacterial and viral terrorists.  Yes, illness is part of the human condition.  And we have powerful treatments that aid your body’s own ability to heal. However, even with today’s medicine it’s  your body’s ability to battle illnesses, such as the common cold that offers concrete evidence of your body’s resiliency.  

Comment on your child’s amazing body.  “Wow, that cut healed in no time!” or “You have such strong, fast legs” or “Look at what your hands have been able to draw.” Remind your child how great it is to have eyes and kidneys and hearts that work so well.  

2. Become a student of the human body with your child.  

Your kids will come to you with questions about how their bodies work.  It can be uncomfortable for both you and your child when you don’t have the answers.  This discomfort can teach children that they should avoid questions about how their bodies work, which may, in part, explain why parents themselves are reluctant to ask doctors embarrassing questions.

Remember, no one has all the answers.  That’s why your doctor participates in continuing medical education.  Your child can remind you of the joy of discovery.  Together you can look for answers.  I mentioned to my son that bones make blood and he asked, “What about creatures with exoskeletons?”  I said, “What an interesting question.  Let’s get on the Internet and see what we can find out.”  Have a child-appropriate book about the body available and learn and use anatomically correct words.  Maybe you can have a family contest to come up with the coolest medical term.  

3. Teach your kids to listen to their bodies.  

Often it feels as if adults are rewarded for ignoring or overcoming the signals from their bodies.  The “hero” who comes to work with the flu or the mom who ignores her need for food or sleep.  Health is maintained when you know the signals that suggest your body is out of balance and respond in a timely manner when your body indicates it needs something.

Help your kids identify when they’re cold or hungry or tired.  You can say even to an infant, “You look hot, so I’m taking off the blanket.”  Give your child some experience regulating his external environment like taking on and off sweaters.  Educate your children that pain is there to keep them safe. Say, “Owies are no fun, but they’re there to keep you from burning yourself on the stove or cutting yourself with a knife.  That’s how your body reminds you to be careful.”

4. Model healthy eating habits.  

Childhood obesity is a growing problem.  Talk with your kids about good food choices and bad ones.  Encourage them to ask themselves,”What kind of food is my body hungry for right now?” and “Am I full?” even if there’s still food on the plate.  Pay attention to see if your child is a grazer or a 3-squares-a-day kid and set an eating schedule that reflects their style.  Decide whether it’s OK to indulge in unhealthy food choices now and then.  When I inquired about the nutritional value of my son’s snack of donuts, he said, It’s health food for the soul!

5. Reward health rather than illness.  

Some of my best childhood memories come from times when I was sick.  In an effort to ease my pain, my mother unwittingly rewarded illness by lavishing attention on me, delivering endless bowls of ice cream and playing games with me.  Who wouldn’t want to be sick!

Instead, lavish attention on your kids when they’re well.  While you don’t want to punish your kids for being sick, consider which privileges of health should be withdrawn during sick days.

How to Develop Healthy Eating Habits

A healthy diet helps you to maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, it takes lots of efforts to maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine. Many people think that they can eat whatever they want if they exercise regularly. But, it’s simply a myth. Your diet is reflected on your body and physical and mental health. 2) Eat different types of foods

3) Be a cautious buyer

Remember to check the food labels carefully when you shop for essential commodities. If a food item contains low amount of fat or sugar, it doesn’t mean that it is a healthier option for you. Many food manufacturers add various unhealthy ingredients to reduce fat, carbohydrates or sugar. Even a seemingly healthy food item may have been manufactured using a less healthy ingredient. For example, you should check whether whole wheat flour is the first ingredient in a whole wheat or whole grain bread. Also, you can ask for nutritional facts of your meal when you order food in a restaurant.

4) Eat smaller meals

If you eat 2-3 larger meals a day, your blood sugar level increases, which is likely to cause weight gain. On the other hand eating 5-6 smaller meals everyday helps you boost your metabolism and get required energy and nutrients to meet energy requirements.

5) Avoid eating junk food

Junk food is bad for your physical as well as mental health. People having junk food are often reported to feel more depressed. Other than this, they are likely to face lots of health problems in their life. So, avoid eating junk foods just for their taste. If you find it difficult to curb your temptation to have junk food, you can indulge in occasional pleasures, but never allow it become a habit!

Keeping your kids clean is a good way to fight of germs. Don’t put your kids in a bubble, though. It is okay to play in the mud from time to time, so long as they take good baths afterwards.

Keep Active!

Encourage your children to join sports and take time to play with them. Children have a lot of energy, and they need to exercise those muscles so that they grow strong. As an adult, you need about half an hour of exercise everyday. If you can spend this half hour playing and running around with your kids, then it’s hitting two birds with one stone. It’s also a great way to bond with your kids. Most children whose parents played with them and spent time with them regularly are less likely to become problem teens. So take up a sport with your kids to ensure that their bodies stay fit, and ensuring a great relationship between the two of you.

Develop Their Brain Power

Get your children to read books, do puzzles, play chess, and other brain boosting activities. These can be after dinner activities for your kids. Exercising their brains is just as important as exercising their bodies and the development of the brain promotes health. So make these activities frequent.

Eat Within Limits

Last but not least, monitor what you’re kids are eating. The quality and quantity of food that your child takes in is very important. Follow the recommended serving sizes for foods, and make sure that the five food groups are well represented in your child’s diet. There is a growing trend of people living alone. Eating out and fast food have become the norm for many. Healthy eating should be a part of their daily plans, but often is not. Dinner, in particular, seems to be a problem. Many feel making meals for one is a chore. In reality, preparing healthy meals takes less time than you think and, in the long run, saves money.

Eating healthy meals can improve your life. Combined with exercise, it will help you look younger and live longer. Skipping meals or eating fast food and high-fat snacks can be dangerous to your overall health. There is great concern among the medical community about the growing obesity of the population. Take control and develop healthier eating habits. It’s relatively easy to cook for one and have tasty, healthy meals.

I have lived alone for many years and developed a healthy eating style. That doesn’t mean I don’t indulge myself every now and then. Overall, I try to follow the guidelines for healthy eating. You can do the same. Following are some tips for creating healthy meals.

Each week make out a menu and grocery list. Buy fresh fruits and vegetables once a week. By planning in advance, you can have tasty and healthful meals.

If you don’t have any cookbooks, purchase a couple. There are a number of cookbooks for making meals for one or two. Purchase one. It’s worth it. You’ll find recipes that are easy to make.

Invest in a slow cooker and slow cooker cookbook. You can create meals with little clean up. Buying slow cooker liners saves you the trouble of scrubbing the pot. You can make many of your favorites including that comfort food you like.

You can also buy frozen vegetables and steamer bags. These bags allow you to put the vegetables in the microwave for a few minutes. Again, no clean up. You can add them to your slow cooker meal.

Divide the meals into plastic container and freeze them. A few minutes in the microwave at dinner time and you have a healthy, tasty meal.

Have a salad with your meal or just a salad. Bags of lettuce can be found in the produce department, or you can make your own. A number of years ago I learned a trick for keeping my own salads fresh for several days. Cut up the vegetables you want except tomatoes. Put them in a bowl with a tight fitting lid. Place a paper towel over the top of the bowl and snap on the lid. Turn the bowl upside down and place it in the refrigerator. The salad will stay fresh for several days.

You can also make your own fruit salad using fruits that are in season. Choose the fruits you like, cut them up and place them in a bowl with a tight fitting lid. Easy to pull out in the morning and have a fruit salad.

Don’t hesitate to eat out alone. I enjoying dining with friends, but every now and then I go solo. Restaurants have made it easier by including healthy choices on their menus. You can even order half salads and smaller portions of entrees

Find the time to eat healthy. Resist a diet of fast food and junk food temptations. Stay active and eat healthy. With healthy solo eating you will feel better, look younger and save money.
